UAB’s student-driven Digital Media team is pumping up middle schoolers for college with GEAR UP Alabama.
GEAR UP, short for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a six-year government grant designed to prepare low-income 7th grade students for success during postsecondary education. GEAR UP Alabama asked UAB Digital Media to create a video that would educate parents and students about the program and get them excited. The only problem is how do 20-somethings appeal to 7th graders — while staying age-appropriate?
Rotoscoping is referred to as a technique in which animators trace over footage, frame by frame, for use in live-action and animated films. This tutorial will use the Adobe After Effects rotobrush tool to acheive this effect.
For this gif we will have a ball falling from the ceiling through a hole in the floor and reseting so it will be a continuous loop. We create the holes using the pen tool to attempt to give some perspective, and use the circle tool to create the ball. (Holding shift to scale it equally) There only need to be 2 layers, the background, and the ball. This will let After Effects import them separately so we can animate them individually.
