UAB’s student-driven Digital Media team is pumping up middle schoolers for college with GEAR UP Alabama.
GEAR UP, short for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, is a six-year government grant designed to prepare low-income 7th grade students for success during postsecondary education. GEAR UP Alabama asked UAB Digital Media to create a video that would educate parents and students about the program and get them excited. The only problem is how do 20-somethings appeal to 7th graders — while staying age-appropriate?
Why do smartphone videos continue to look like they were filmed on a cell phone?
Most can recall memories of a mother or father reading their childhood favorites, all in an attempt at scaring away monsters, or closing the eyes of sleepy heads. The practice of storytelling has been around for a very long time. Since the moment we developed the most basic forms of communication, stories have been the catalyst for passing down our imaginations, fears, loves, passions, philosophies, and religions. In fact you could say that we owe everything that we hold dear to that time honored tradition. Without it our evolution as a society, culture, or even species may not have been possible.
Film has a distinct look and feel – an incredible color palette and tangible softness. Film is where it’s at, visually. You may try to make your digital images look like film and fail – or just realize that the easiest way to get the look of film is to shoot film.
The art of telling a story goes back to the earliest of mankind’s civilizations. Gilgamesh, the stories of The Old Testament, and others show the same qualities as the modern narrative. The difference is that the medium has changed and the dominant medium today is video. Video production is an art form within the ability to tell a story and draw out emotions with editing techniques in particular.
Color temperature was first introduced by William Thomson 1st Baron Kelvin in 1848 which gave temperature ratings to visible light measured in kelvins(K). Temperature color in film and photography is most commonly known as White balance. Candlelight is at the lowest ratings between 1K-2,000K.
Photography, by definition, means “drawing with light.” Video is simply a series of still images which, when shown on a screen, creates the illusion of moving images. Now, imagine that your scene is your canvas. The lights (your pencil) are used to reveal and illuminate your subject. Shadows act as your eraser by hiding areas of your subject. You can’t see details that are in the shadows.
